Wood and Stain Options

At Donachelli's Cellars, we offer a variety of wood and stain options to fit your style and budget.

Each tree has its own distinct grain. As a result, we offer woods with a variety of different patterns. Most woods we offer feature a fairly straight grain. A few varieties feature curly or wavy grain. Appearances vary based on types of wood. Grain types can determine how a piece of wood is milled.

The examples below illustrate the variety of grain patterns in each wood. Each displays a variation of grain beginning with a more relaxed, expanded grain on the far left and gradually working across the spectrum ending with a tightly packed, compact grain example on the far right. Grain patterns sometimes give the wood a dramatic appearance, and adding different stains will accentuate these grain patterns to varying degrees.

Rustic Pine is a soft wood that comes with varying degrees of small, medium or large knots. The color is a pale yellow varying from deep yellow to reddish-brown. It can be glued satisfactorily, takes nails and screws well, but staining, painting or varnishing normally requires treating the wood for gumminess. This is a less expensive material for a custom wine cellar and is often used for its rustic appearance. The following series are available in Rustic Pine: Curvy Cubes, Mini Stacks, Traditional Series, and the Vintner Series.

Premium Redwood has dramatic color variations in the premium redwood range from whitish-blonde to a pinkish-red shade demonstrated in streaks throughout the wood. Due to these variations, a custom cellar made entirely of premium redwood truly is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. Adding a custom stain only enhances these color streaks, and intensifies the different shadings. With or without stain, redwood is well-suited to the humid, cool conditions of a wine cellar, and endures extremely well in these conditions. The following series are available in Premium Redwood: Curvy Cubes, Traditional Series, and Vintner Series.
